TESTS

This section refers to various international TESTS OF ENGLISH that are used at the higher education level.

This Blog will include 5 different TESTS, some of which are specifically for ESL students (ESL = English Second Language), and some of which are used by ESL students and also by native speakers who wish to comply with the admission requirements to programs in many universities.

The list of TESTS is as follows:

  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language.

This test is designed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is generally taken by non-native speakers who wish to study at American university or enter international studies programs in other countries.

  • IELTS – International English Language Testing System

This is an international standardized test of English language proficiency. It is managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd, working jointly.

The IELTS Academic Version is accepted by most academic institutions in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa, and also by many similar institutions in the Unites States.

  • GRE = Graduate Record Examination.

This standardized test is a requirement for admission to many graduate schools in the United States and other English speaking countries. It is also a requirement in other countries for their international graduate and business programs that are taught in English. As such, it is used by native and non-native speakers of English.

We will be referring to the GRE General Test that was modified in 2011.

  • GMAT = Graduate Management Admission Test.

This test is used as an admission requirement to post-graduate programs offered by Business Schools the world over. Some of these programs are the MBA, the Master of Accountancy and the Master of Finance. Reports  at the present date show that the GMAT is used by institutions in 83 countries.

In some cases the GMAT and the GRE are considered to be interchangeable, but the GMAT continues to be a very significant test, used by native and non-native speakers of English alike.

  • COMMENT ON GRE AND GMAT.

Both these tests include sections of quantitative reasoning based on Mathematical concepts and processes. These sections require some knowledge of basic Mathematics that include the properties of numbers, fundamental concepts of Algebra and Geometry and some initial knowledge of Statistics.

It so happens that I am a Math teacher and I have been working with these quantitative sections of the Tests for some years.  However I will need some time to organize some materials for this area, so those sections will probably be rather weak to begin with. I could always answer some specific requests in the meanwhile.

  • TOEIC – Test of English for International Communication.

This is an English test designed specifically for measuring the English language skills of people working in an international environment

This Test is used mainly in the Business environment and does not constitute an academic admissions test. It has various possible combinations as to the skills that are tested.

In this Blog I will be referring to the basic skills of Listening and Reading.

See you on the posts!
